Komen Tak Berapa Lahar Akak tentang Penulisan Kutuk Penang by Predeep Nambiar, NST bertajuk "Adapting to the island's quirky ways"

Adapting to the island's quirky ways
By Predeep Nambiar

THREE weeks after being transferred from Kuala Lumpur to Penang, I have found some peculiarities about island people.

Many people tell me the island, famed for its delicious food, is better than the rest of the country.

Food reviews in newspapers and magazines have featured nasi kandar, ais kacang, mee goreng and what not, but till today I have not found anything that is truly more outstanding than the food in Kuala Lumpur.

I had been a frequent visitor to Penang, going to Batu Ferringhi for the past five years for the annual Penang Jazz Festival. My friends and I would meticulously plan on which food hot spots to go to.

After going to all these eateries, we have yet to find  anything that is truly great.

Till today, I still prefer the nasi kandar shop at SS2, Petaling Jaya. Call me biased, but I dare say, nothing comes close to the food there.

Ironically, this nasi kandar restaurant says its the "original" Penang Nasi Kandar. Hard to believe that it is   from Penang.

Then, there are the motorists.

I have been warned by my friends about Penang drivers.  KL drivers have admitted to me that they are "scared" to drive on Penang roads   because of the large number of motorcycles and and trishaws.

I have seen Penang drivers in KL and they are "real terrors", lording it over well-behaved KL drivers.

You can tell they are from Penang. Take a look in your rear-view mirror and if you cannot see the licence plates (because they are tailgating) and the driver looks furious,  it is usually a 'P' number plate.

God played a cruel joke on me by getting me transferred to Penang. Now I have to deal with Penang drivers all the time.

Over the past three weeks, I have been driving around, getting used to the island's narrow city streets and roads on the outskirts of the city.

The first thing you will notice is the speed limits on these roads.

Somewhere on a road near Jalan Pangkor you can see a 65kph sign, when the speed limit, I believe, should be 40kph, taking into account the number of cars turning off to various junctions. I am no road engineer, but having ridiculous speed limits in such small, short stretches of roads are dangerous.

A couple of years ago, I was driving on the winding roads of Batu Ferringhi. This was  unchartered territory for me at the time and being the cautious KL driver that I am, I was irked by tailgaters constantly flashing their headlights and forcing me to drive faster.

A couple of metres later, we saw a speed limit sign for 90kph. That is an absurd speed for a winding hillslope road.

Penangites also now claim their public transport is one of the best. So the other day, I took a taxi to an assignment in Batu Ferringhi. I had to go to the police headquarters near Chowrasta Market.

I got into the cab and asked the uncle to use the meter. He stared me down and said: "You must be new here, aren't you?" I nodded.

"Over here, we don't use meters. They are just for show," he said smilingly.

So I asked: "How much to downtown?" He said RM30.

I agreed because I was in a hurry and because I was  new here.

In KL, this cabbie would be running the  risk of losing his cab licence. Where is SPAD when you need it. Travel incognito around the country and book these cabbies. Before you know it, they will be toeing the line.

On another occasion, I had to go to Butterworth, so I decided to take the ferry.  I took a taxi from Jalan Masjid Negeri. He started to converse with me in English, thinking that I was a foreigner.

"Where to boss?" he asked.

"To the ferry," I said.

"Oh, that will cost you RM18," he said.

When asked why he would not use the meter, the cabbie, in his 40s, said that during the day, it was no use  and he would only use it at night  because at night, there would be less traffic and what not.

Tired of these excuses, I just paid the fare and left. Poorer.

Here are some tips for those new to Penang.

Be prepared to change your car's brake pads.

In Penang, it is all about braking. There will be an odd uncle with his kapchai motorcycle, stopping abruptly in the middle of the road, looking up at the adjacent buildings, wondering if he had found the place.

So just pretend he is part of the road median and avoid him.

Please cut queues, it is acceptable here. Unlike KL where you get honked for cutting queues, in Penang, getting into queue early, with proper signals will get you all kinds of unkind gestures from the driver behind you, a stare and a prolonged honk.

Very soon, I am afraid, I will start behaving like a Penang driver with KL number plates. If you can't win them over, just join them-lah.

Hello u olls semua,

Predeep.

1.  Makanan yang tak best
Makanan Penang memang dikenali sebagai among of the best in Melesia. Takkan kita nak pi potong lidah dia?  Nak buat macam dia. Biak pi la dia sorang yang tak suka makanan Penang.  Anthony Bourdin pun mai makan kat Nasik Kandar Line Clear...and he likes it. Sapa Predeep nak banding dengan Bourdin?

Mungkin jugak sapa yang bawak dia pi makan-makan kat Penang ni,  pi bawak tempat tempat yang merapu punya.  Mana nak pi tau? Bersih,  service tip top...Orang KL mahai macam mana pun tempat makan tu janji sedap depa sanggup bayar.  Sebagai orang Penang,  cara kita berbeza.  So janganlah marah Predeep,  dia tak boleh ikut style kita.

2.  Teksi tidak mahu menggunakan meter
Pasai teksi drivers tu memang betui la sangat. So,  di mana SPAD?

So ampa nak kata Predeep penipu?  Ampa nak marah apa yang Predeep kata kata?  Aiyooo!!!

En.  Khafi,  suami akak mai Penang sejak tahun 2010.  First time dia drive kat sini,  dia memang mengamokkkkkkkk saja.  Dia kata orang memang macam siyeee!  Bawak kereta macam gila.  Semuanya membahayakan!  Setiap kali dia bawak kereta dia akan mengamuk sampailah akak kata "Memang hang tak boleh bawak style orang KL.  Hang join cara orang sini drive,  u like it or not!!"

So akak sangat setuju dengan kata -kata Predeep.  " If you can't win them over, just join them-lah"

Kita duk marah balik kat Predeep,  tapi apa kita buat nak perbaiki segala tohmahan Predeep.

Its all about brands dan classy.  Kami orang Penang takdak lagu tu punyiiia!  So tepuk dada tanya selera u olls.

    Komen kami kat bwh ni:

Mula2 kami mmg nak marah gak baca komen x semenggah encik pradeep tu.tp bila pikiaq2 balik ada gak some point dia yg masuk akai..

    1. Driver kt Penang:
Yess kt sini mmg most of driver suka feeling2 drive keta moto ala2 romantika di paris.. So nak xnak kena join them even kdg2 rsa nak langgaq ja keta moto lepa tu.ahahaha
Yg paling kecian si driver keta mewah la.sayang sungguh keta mahai2 tp keta lepa xdak signal.sebab tu lepa suka suki potong lane org tanpa besalah.lepa ni patut tukaq pakai moto ja p pasang signal yg bunyi tit2 tu..save pun save xyah dok pakai keta ribu riban sbulan tp xdak signal.choiii!!!

    2. Driver taxi:
Yess..mmg dari kita kecik2 dlu taxi kt penang mana tau guna meter.org png kan suka traditional :p kami penah kena naik taxi dari jetty sampai opis kami kt green hall ja RM10.huhu..but wat to do.shuttle yg free tu xmau jln nak tggu bg bas full..
Tp mcm encik predeep tu naik taxi dr masjid negeri p jetty RM18 murah la!!! Kalo guna meter masak kot dia nak bayaq.
Cer pikiaq letak2 juboq ja meter dah RM2(ni rate msa kami kt kl 6thn dlu, rate lani kami xtau)dgn jem truk nya lagi sure lbh dari apa yg taxi driver tu mintak. So,kat sini ada pro and cons nye wahai encik predeep!!

BUT KAMI X SOKONG PASAI FOOD!!

Kwn kami baru ja balik dari penang ni ke kl,dah mula mroyan rindu nak melantak nasik kandaq line clear!!! Apakah maksud nya itu??mamak line clear letak mandrem dlm nasik dia ka??
Ayoooo encik predeep, if penang ni makanan x sempoi, xkan la I and jumie nak agam lagi vogue camni.khensss makhayam???
And u ckp god hukum u antar u kt sini ye?ahahaha..ayooo hang igt penang ni neraka ka??blajaq2 la bwk diri.p cari tempat2 mkn yg sedap.tp kalo lidah hang da memang kematu xleh nk watpa arr..balik umah masak sendiri sudah! :)

Lastly kami sokong ayat Jumie, if penang ni tak sempoi.xkan la cuti skolah ja bederet keta Plat W n B kt cni.. Even org klantan yg mkn manis2 pun ramai.
So encik predeep open ur eyes and see k...

  5. yeah, another good article by Mdm Jumie.. Hahaha. Kami lak nak komen atas kapasiti orang luaq yang dah terjatuh cinta dengan Penang.

Part Driver dan Taxi tu, x leh nak kata apa la. Kami pun sama macam En. Khafi gak. Bawak kereta kalo tak menyumpah memaki memang tak boleh. Sampai kawan2 kami pun dok nasihat, kurang-kurangkan laaa memaki dikala mendrive. Aritu kami nak pi airport. Sebab emergency, amek jah taxi. nasib dia guna meter. Pastu siap tanya, awat pak cik guna meter, pelik punya pasai.

Yes, tentang makanan, memang kami tak boleh terima laaa. Bukan setakat nasi kandaq jah oiy, makanan best kat sini. Nasi campoq, pecal lele, tom yam tom yam, makanan seafood, segala jenis meknika makanan yang ada kat Penang, semua best dan murah-murah. kat KL nuu, nak makan pecal sampai belas-belas ringgit, kat Penang RM5 jah oiy. Tu tak kira Tandoori kat kapitan lagi.. mak haih. lapaq teruih.

Kesimpulannya, I Heart Penang. Kalo buleh, nak tinggal dan menetap kat sini terus. Haha. okeyh.. Buhbye.. haha..

  6. Hahahaha... bab makan tu aku rasa dia kena berguru ngan hg aa jumie... salah pilih kawan2 la tu kot... kawan2 dia bwk pi tempat merapu... yg xsedap... tak pon tekak dia da terbiasa kat sana pastu dia komplen sini xsedap sbb xkena ngan selera dia...

    ReplyDelete
  7. sbg org penang tulen dan asli yg sedang menetap di KL mmg nak bgtau bab makan ni penang tetap no.1. smpai skrg saya xdak lg tmpt mkn fav di bumi kl ni. semuanya yg sedang2 aja. punyala dok baca review blogger tmpt mkn tu sdap la apa la kat sini. tp bila p rasa hampeh.. sampai kami kata depa ni xdak taste ka apa mcm ni pun kata sedap. ada 1 tempat nasi kandaq yg depa kata ganja sgt, kami try adoi jauh lagi nak lawan nasi kandaq line clear @ beratoq. char koey teow tok sah kata la.. p merata dah kat kl ni smua mcm pa ntah. boleh lawan ka char koey teow kampung pelet nun. sory sgt laaa.. bab makan mmg kami xsetuju sgt sbb seantero malaysia tau mkanan kat penang no.1. Predeep.. aku nak habaq lidah hg taste apa aku pun xtau..

bab jalan..mmg xboleh kata pa la. driver penang mmg ganas.. hehe. aku drive kat kl ni pun mmg dok bawa lg aura sbg driver tulen penang. org yg xreti maki org pun kalau p bawa keta kat penang sure kuaq habis sumpah seranah smua.

apa pun ada yg aku setuju pa dia kata, ada yg aku xsetuju. tp pa pun, sejauh mana aku p, penang tetap no.1. dok kl ni aku keja dok rindu penang ja.

  8. Actually, I feel sorry for Pradeep that he is very much lost in Penang and not knowing how to overcome this situation. But I’m astonish to know that in this 3 weeks of being in Penang, he actually never made the effort to go around and asking around from the Penangites on the places to eat or visit but he indeed he had the time sitting and typing out a utterly stupid article condemning about Penang via NST.
Come on la Pradeep, even a 9 years child would know the best place to ear or visit in Penang.
I would like to suggest putting in move effort of getting to know Penang rather than bashing my state for something which is almost not true.
For many years, I’ve known people making weekend trips to Penang from Kuala Lumpur just for the Nasi Kandars.
Being half Kuala Lumpur’s “citizen”, I guess I have to agree with Jumie when she says that we do need to pay more for the good food and tip top services but it not like that Penang.
    That’s extremely true.
Pradeep, can I know what’s the most original food of Kuala Lumpur that you have tried and would swear by it?
Nasi Lemak Antarabangsa, well, as I know, the person who used to sell the Nasi Lemak is from Kelantan. Where is the originality?
You have been coming here every year for the past 5 years for Jazz Festival??? Hmmm, and I still wonder, have you tried our local food?? Seriously?? I guess there is something wrong with you.
    Please see a doctor soon.

About the taxi, Pradeep Nambiar, are you freaking kidding me, like are you nuts??
A taxi from Batu Ferringi to the police HQ near komtar is RM30 and from Masjid Negeri to ferry RM18. Its abso-freaking-lutely CHEAP la.

I still remember paying RM45 from Gombak to KLCC, RM60 from Gonbak to Megamall, RM100 from Sepang to Kajang and RM30 from Sentul to Batu Caves.

Come Pradeep, let’s have debate on the taxi topic because I’m sure I’m going to make you shut you sissy mouth up.

Maybe I will angry with the way we Penang people drive but not all of us are badass.
And mind you, if you really want to know, the P drivers are mostly from Selangor/KL and the badass drivers are mostly the B and W plate number.

    Just read this, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nasi_kandar

And you last sentence, “Very soon, I am afraid, I will start behaving like a Penang driver with KL number plates. If you can't win them over, just join them-lah.”. Almost everyone from KL drives this way as soon as they reach Penang. Not because of us but because they kind of that Penang is a racing track and we, the Penangites, don’t mind them behaving this way because we are always friendly and welcoming.

So please Pradeep, join us as how we joined you KL drivers who have successfully changed Penang Roads to a racing track.

Thank us Penangites that at least, we were too busy with life that we had no time to write an article regarding this matter in the local newspaper like what you did and Salam 1 Malaysia to you too,
